NASA Administrator Isaacman backs Artemis 3 Launch Today plan for 2027

NASA Administrator Isaacman said launch today that he is “extremely confident” Artemis 3 will reach 2027, while assembly work for the mission is already moving in the Vehicle Assembly Building. He said the agency has stepped into stacking operations, putting hardware work ahead of the flight sequence that still has to come.

Isaacman on Friday

Isaacman made the statement on Friday alongside Brian Hughes and members of the Florida congressional delegation. “I’m extremely confident that we are we are going to be able to launch Artemis 3 next year,” he said, linking the date directly to the work already underway.

That work is visible in pieces. The Space Launch System is being assembled at Kennedy Space Center, the Orion spacecraft’s crew and service module were mated earlier this summer, and four of the ten segments of the solid rocket boosters have been stacked inside High Bay 3. Engine integration onto the core stage is happening inside High Bay 2.

Blue Origin and SpaceX

The launch sequence itself is layered. Artemis 3 begins with Blue Origin’s New Glenn rocket sending a test version of the Blue Moon Mark 2 lander into low Earth orbit. Days later, SLS and Orion launch and rendezvous and dock with Blue Origin’s vehicle, with the astronauts remaining onboard Orion while the two are mated.

After the separate launches, SpaceX is slated to launch Starship Version 3 with a docking adapter on the nose of the upper stage. Orion will then dock with the target vehicle, extending the mission beyond a single launch window and tying together hardware from Blue Origin and SpaceX.

Isaacman said he visited the Blue Origin assembly line floor on Friday and saw components for the test lander that will be used in the rendezvous and docking sequence. He also said the Blue Origin test lander includes a life support system and crew habitation area, but not the BE-7 engine of the Blue Moon Mark 2.

Artemis 4 in 2028

He said the mission’s early flights are meant to reduce risk before Artemis 4 in 2028. Isaacman added that if SpaceX can launch again in early September after its last launch and keep flying potentially every couple of weeks before the end of the year, NASA will feel very good about that company’s time to contribute to Artemis 3 next year.

The practical takeaway for the mission is simple: the launch target is not just a date on paper, but a sequence already moving through assembly, testing and launch preparation. Artemis 3 now depends on whether those separate launch steps stay close enough together for Orion to meet the target vehicle in 2027.
