Reid Detmers gave the Angels exactly the kind of performance that can settle a tight game and steady a season. He threw eight shutout innings, allowed two hits, did not walk a batter and struck out 11 as the Angels beat the Kansas City Royals 1-0 on Saturday night.
It was the Angels' fourth victory in five games and Detmers' first home win this season at Angel Stadium. In a matchup between two clubs separated by just one game in the standings, the left-hander made the difference by controlling the game from the first inning to the eighth.
Detmers set the tone from the start
The Angels entered at 49-75, while the Royals came in at 50-74, but the records mattered far less than Detmers' command. He was in complete control, limiting the Royals to two hits and never giving them a free pass.
That is the kind of outing managers want in a close game. The concern for the opposition is not only that Detmers missed bats, but that he also removed the chance for any easy momentum through walks or extended innings.
One run was enough
The only run of the night came in the eighth inning. After Wade Meckler walked, Jose Siri pinch-ran, stole second and scored on Nolan Schanuel's RBI single to break the deadlock.
It was a simple sequence, but one that reflected the game well: pressure, speed and a timely hit. The Angels did not need much support once Detmers had put them in position.
Joyce closed it out
Ben Joyce finished the job in the ninth with a hitless inning for his second save. That gave the Angels a clean end to a game built on run prevention, with the bullpen protecting the lead after Detmers had done the heavy lifting.
The Royals will try again on Sunday, when Noah Cameron was set to face Ryan Johnson in the series finale. But on Saturday night, the story belonged to Detmers, whose first home win this season arrived in emphatic fashion.
