Visitors to Hampstead Heath have been warned to respect the rules or stay away after what was described as a busy summer marked by problems caused by a small minority.
Gregory Jones said the Heath should remain “a place where everyone feels safe to relax, exercise and enjoy nature.” He added that people who ignore the rules risk fines or arrest, but stressed that those who cannot control their conduct should “please stay away from the Heath.”
The warning comes as hot, dry conditions place additional pressure on the sensitive environment. The Heath also relies heavily on staff and volunteers for conservation, habitat management and visitor engagement, with volunteer time across the site totalling over 15,000 hours last year.
Last month, Hampstead Heath was awarded the Green Flag and Green Heritage Awards, recognition that underlines the importance of keeping the open space well managed even during periods of heavy use.
Extra pressures have also affected facilities on site. At the Lido, charitable funds had to be diverted to extra security, reflecting the wider strain that poor behaviour can place on public spaces.
The Heath has seen some positive developments as well. After an extensive refurbishment, Parliament Hill Café reopened, adding to the sense that the area continues to attract large numbers of visitors while also requiring careful stewardship.
The message from Gregory Jones was clear: Hampstead Heath is open to everyone, but only if people respect the rules that help keep it safe, protected and enjoyable for all.
