Francis Coquelin’s return to Stade Lavallois was supposed to be a homecoming story. Instead, his first appearance at Le Basser quickly became a reminder of how unforgiving football can be, especially when a single collision turns a reunion into a medical concern.
The former Arsenal midfielder was involved in a heavy clash with Wilitty Younoussa during Stade Lavallois’ match against Nantes and was taken to hospital. Raphael Faurie-Pacaud said Coquelin was conscious when he left the field, but the injury was serious enough to raise immediate alarm.
A worrying setback after a carefully chosen return
Coquelin joined Stade Lavallois from Nantes this summer on a one-year contract with the option of a further year, bringing an end to an 18-month stint at Nantes and returning to the club from his hometown after spells in England and Spain. He had made clear that this would be the final transfer of his playing career, so the move carried a sense of closure as well as practicality.
That is what made the injury feel especially cruel. After 18 years away from Laval, Coquelin had come back with experience, perspective and two FA Cup winners’ medals from Arsenal in 2015 and 2017. He was expected to add composure and authority. Instead, his first night at Le Basser ended with concern over what Raphael Faurie-Pacaud described as a suspicion of an orbital floor fracture.
David Vignes called the injury “pretty serious,” and that assessment matters because it suggests this is not a minor knock that can be managed in a few days. The report indicated Coquelin could be sidelined for several months, which would be a major blow for both player and club so soon after his return.
What it means for Stade Lavallois
Stade Lavallois still found a way to beat Nantes 2-1, with Mathis Houdayer scoring a last-minute winner, but the result did little to soften the concern around Coquelin. A victory can change a mood; it cannot change an injury diagnosis.
For Laval, the question now is whether a player brought back for his leadership and experience can even begin to settle before being forced out again. For Coquelin, the challenge is more personal. This was meant to be the final chapter of a career that had taken him from Laval to Arsenal and back again. Instead, the first page of that return has already been interrupted by uncertainty.
The scoreline will be remembered. The injury may matter more.
