Kate Douglass broke the women’s 50m freestyle world record twice in one day at the Pan Pacific Championships, turning a strong morning swim into an even faster performance in the final.
In the morning preliminaries, Douglass lowered the record to 23.49. By evening, she had taken it down again, winning the final in 23.19sec and setting the second individual world record of the meet. The rapid improvement was notable even in a sprint event, where hundredths of a second often separate the top swimmers.
Douglass had already been in record-breaking form this summer. On June 19, she first lowered the mark at the TYR Pro Swim Series meet in Indianapolis with a 23.59. Nine days later, Gretchen Walsh pushed the standard further to 23.55, only for Douglass to reclaim it in the pool at Pan Pacifics.
A big day beyond the sprint
The 50 free final was not the only race on Douglass’ schedule. Just 25 minutes after winning the sprint, she finished second in the 200 breaststroke in 2:22.57. That kind of double duty underlines the range that has made her one of the most versatile swimmers in the field.
The Pan Pacific Championships brought together athletes from the US, Australia, Canada, Japan and China, among others, and the record swim gave Douglass one of the meet’s biggest headlines. For a five-time Olympic medallist, it was another reminder that she remains capable of pushing the standard forward on the sport’s biggest stages.
With the world record now at 23.19sec, the focus shifts to how low it can go next and whether Douglass can keep extending the mark as the season continues.
