Nils Koppen described Engels as a key target who has already shown confidence at a big club, while also stressing that his best years are still ahead of him. That is a useful profile for a team trying to manage a promotion push without losing sight of the bigger picture.
Engels, for his part, made the ambition plain. He called West Ham “a really nice project” and said the big goal is to go back to the Premier League. That is exactly the sort of language a newly relegated club wants to hear, but it also underlines the challenge. The Championship is rarely won by reputation alone. It is won by teams that can turn transfer ambition into weekly control, consistency and results.

That is why this signing matters beyond the fee. West Ham have brought in a player with a strong recent record at Celtic, and they have done it before a demanding opening stretch that begins at Burnley and quickly moves toward Charlton.
