Cricket Australia will add extra guardrails around selection decisions after Ash Gardner's relationship with Georgia Voll became public, with the governing body making clear that the vice-captain will not be involved in any area where a conflict could exist.
On Thursday, Todd Greenberg said on SEN that the issue had already been known inside Cricket Australia before it appeared in the press, and that the organisation would strengthen its existing policies because Gardner is part of the leadership group. That matters because the question was never just about privacy. It was also about power, perception and whether selection decisions needed clearer separation once the relationship became public.
Cricket Australia moves to protect selection integrity
Greenberg was blunt about the need for extra measures. He said Ash is a highly regarded leader in the system, and that the CA board has oversight of leadership decisions. He also said Cricket Australia would put in additional policies so that any perception of conflict, or any actual conflict, around selection would be handled properly and respectfully.
He added that, because Gardner is vice-captain, Cricket Australia would make sure she was not involved in those selection matters. That is the central change here: not a wholesale policy reset, but a tighter set of safeguards around a sensitive area that could have created confusion if left unchecked.
Gardner responds to the scrutiny
Gardner addressed the situation on Thursday in a post on Instagram. She said that while her separation from her wife is a personal matter, she understood why her current relationship status needed to be addressed by Cricket Australia given her position as vice-captain.
She also thanked the CA Board for supporting her continued leadership, saying she looked forward to playing a strong role for her teammates in the season ahead. In the same statement, Gardner said she was grateful for the time Monica and I shared, and sorry for the pain this has caused, adding that she wished her nothing but happiness and success in the future.
That response gives the story its balance. Cricket Australia has not moved Gardner aside, and the board has backed her to continue in leadership. But the organisation has also signalled that it recognises the sensitivity of the situation and the need to manage selection separately from personal relationships.
The bigger issue now is not whether Cricket Australia knew about the relationship, but how firmly those new guardrails are applied from here.
