Fontaines D.C. brought Dopamine Chamber into their first live performance of the year in Cadiz, Spain, where they debuted two new songs, “Marianne” and “Six Shot Morning.” The 19-song set gave fans their first public look at material that had only existed in writing before the weekend.

Cadiz Debuts Marianne

The band played in Cadiz on Friday, Aug. 7, and Saturday, Aug. 8. The new songs leaned darker and more electronic, which is the clearest sign yet that the live set is moving beyond the sound of Romance and the group’s fourth LP.

Carlos O'Connell on writing

Carlos O'Connell had already said the band had been writing and that it had been fun, and the Cadiz shows turned that into something audible. For listeners, that means the new material has now moved from studio-room language to a live test in front of an audience.

Trevor Dietz and the next run

The show also carried a quieter complication: Fontaines D.C. are pushing ahead after Trevor Dietz died in June at the age of 47, and they had called him their “sixth member.” The tribute they gave him — “Trevor was beside us from the beginning of our journey as a band, we have never known Fontaines D.C. without him, the sixth member of the band” and “He cared passionately for us and for what was fair and right in the wider world. He was fearless in his beliefs. We will miss him always.” — sits behind the new songs as the band heads toward France, Switzerland and Austria, then Reading & Leeds Festival on Aug. 28 and 29, Electric Picnic in Ireland on Aug. 30, Shaky Knees Festival in Atlanta on Sep. 18, Sea.Hear.Now in Asbury Park, New Jersey on Sep. 20, and Ohana Festival in Dana Point, California on Sep. 27.

The open question is whether “Marianne” and “Six Shot Morning” are standalone songs or part of the next release cycle, and the Cadiz debut does not settle that yet.
