From there, Barcelona made five proposals to Manchester City, including four formal offers and one verbal offer, before both sides settled on a fee that satisfied the selling club.
How the deal developed
Barcelona’s first offer was 45 million euros fixed plus variables. Manchester City responded by asking for 90 million euros, also including fixed and variable amounts. The gap narrowed over the following days, with Barcelona submitting a penultimate offer of 70 million euros on Friday night before Deco and Hugo Viana finalized the definitive agreement on Sunday.
The final figure, 75 million euros including fixed and variable payments, reflects the value both clubs placed on the move. Rodri had only one year left on his Manchester City contract, but the English club still wanted him to renew. Instead, Barcelona moved quickly once the midfielder chose them over Real Madrid.
What happens next
With the fee agreed, the transfer still needs the final formal steps before it becomes official. But the major hurdle is now gone, and Barcelona have completed one of the summer’s biggest deals by landing a Ballon d’Or winner after a brief but intense negotiation period.
The talks also follow a familiar pattern for Barcelona. The club has previously had lengthy negotiations, including discussions with PSG for Ferran Torres, and this latest deal again shows how the final number can shift after several rounds of proposals.
