Larissa Iapichino made the kind of start that can settle a long jump final in a hurry, reaching 7.00 meters on her first attempt and moving into the lead at the European athletics championships.
The opening round already showed how close the competition would be. Mihambo led off the long jump final with 6.94 meters, while Sawyers and other challengers kept the standings tight. At one stage, four athletes were separated by just six centimeters, underlining how little room there was for error.
A narrow lead, but a valuable one
Iapichino's 7.00-meter jump gave her the top spot, and she then stayed in front after a near-miss second effort. In a final shaped by fine margins, that first-round mark mattered just as much as any later attempt, because it forced the rest of the field to chase from behind.
The numbers around her made the situation even more intriguing. Kpatcha was among the athletes in the mix, while Sawyers and Mihambo remained close enough to keep pressure on the lead. With the field packed so tightly, every centimeter counted.
More Italian success on a busy championship day
The live coverage also carried other Italian results across the European athletics championships. Earlier in the day, Pietro Riva won silver in the men's marathon, while Italy picked up team silver in the women's marathon. Later, Matteo Oliveri missed three attempts at 5.70 meters and finished 13th.
The marathon section added more context to the day, with Sofia Yaremchuk and Giovanna Epis both part of the women's race. Epis described the course as demanding and said she knew she had prepared well, while Riva said he was happy with his result and noted that he felt strong before the finish.
For Iapichino, though, the story was simpler: one early jump, one lead, and a final that remained tight enough to keep everyone watching the board.
