Brendan O'Carroll has cancelled filming for this year’s Mrs Brown’s Boys Christmas and New Year’s specials after two jaw fractures left him needing immediate surgery. The move also pushes back Mrs Brown’s Boys D’Panto, turning a routine production cycle into a 2027 wait for one of television’s most durable Christmas fixtures.
O'Carroll said the fractures were found during a CT scan and that he requires immediate surgery and a few months recovery. He added: “To say I am heartbroken is an absolute understatement.”
plans for 2027
O'Carroll said: “I am talking with the about getting Mrs Brown’s Boys back on the screen in 2027.” He also said he is hoping to reschedule the D’Panto arena shows for 2027, which gives the production team a clear target but no fixed timetable beyond that year.
That gap matters because Mrs Brown’s Boys still carries a large audience footprint even after years of criticism. The 2013 Christmas special was watched by 11.5 million people, and the show has won best comedy six times at the National Television Awards.
1.6 million on Christmas Day
Last year’s Christmas Day episode drew 1.6 million viewers, a sharp contrast with the show’s peak and a reminder that the brand now trades on legacy as much as raw reach. In the same holiday window, Amandaland was watched by 3.1 million people on 25 December 2025, showing how crowded the seasonal schedule has become for comedy.
Mrs Brown’s Boys first TV series was commissioned in 2011 by RTÉ and the, and O'Carroll received TV Bafta nominations in 2011 and 2014. The run has never depended on unanimous critical respect; it has depended on an audience that still turns up when the title returns.
Agnes Brown and 2027
O'Carroll closed with a promise to viewers: “Our fans mean the world to us, thank you from the bottom of my heart for your love and support and trust me, Agnes Brown and her family will be back!” The practical reading is simple: the injury stops this year’s filming, the arena dates move, and the next real checkpoint is whether recovery stays on track for a 2027 return.
