Andrea Platania warns on Manchester Airport Travel Disruption for 5 days

Manchester Airport travel disruption begins on Monday August 17, with overnight engineering work between Wilmslow and Manchester Piccadilly forcing some Northern and Transport for Wales services to end before the airport. Passengers on late-night and early-morning journeys need to check whether their train finishes at Manchester Piccadilly, Manchester Oxford Road or Stockport.

Andrea Platania of Transfeero warned that the dangerous assumption is that a train advertised as travelling to Manchester Airport will take passengers all the way there. He said the change matters for anyone with a flight departure time that cannot move, because bus stops, luggage loading, waiting and road travel can add uncertainty that is not shown in the train time.

National Rail says the work runs from Monday August 17 through Friday August 21. It is taking place overnight, and the practical effect is a break in the normal through service on some journeys to Manchester Airport.

On the 22:23 Blackpool North to Manchester Airport service, the train will terminate at Manchester Piccadilly from Monday to Thursday, and a replacement bus will run between Manchester Piccadilly and Manchester Airport. The 23:00 Liverpool Lime Street to Manchester Airport service and the 23:22 Blackpool North to Manchester Airport service will also finish at Manchester Piccadilly, with buses covering the remaining journey.

The 23:37 train from Manchester Piccadilly to Manchester Airport will not operate and will be replaced entirely by a bus. National Rail also says a bus will be provided from Manchester Oxford Road to Manchester Airport for affected journeys.

Other services are being cut back at different points. The 21:21 Blackpool North to Manchester Airport service will terminate at Stockport, while the 20:02 Holyhead to Manchester Airport service will terminate at Manchester Oxford Road.

Andrea Platania on station changes

Platania said Piccadilly, Oxford Road, Stockport and Manchester Airport are separate stations, and passengers should not treat them as interchangeable simply because they appear within the same regional journey. He said a traveller who allows only a small margin could reach central Manchester when they expected to be entering the terminal.

For anyone travelling this week, the practical step is to check the exact departure time against the altered service pattern before setting out. A ticket showing Manchester Airport does not guarantee that the rail portion reaches the airport, and on several of these services the final stretch will be by bus instead of train.
