Getafe are working on a move for Stefan Bajčetić this summer, but Liverpool now have an important decision to make over the midfielder’s next step.

Bajčetić has one more year left on his Liverpool contract, which makes the terms of any exit especially important. If Liverpool allow him to leave on loan without an extension, they could risk losing him on a free transfer next summer.

A career that has stalled after early promise

Bajčetić was once seen as one of the brightest young players coming through Liverpool and the Premier League. In 2022, he starred in games against Chelsea, Everton and Real Madrid, a run that showed why he was so highly rated at the time.

Since then, though, his progress has been slowed by a series of injuries. He last made an appearance for Liverpool in May 2024, and his recent loan spells have not brought a clean reset.

He was recalled from his loan spell in Austria in January of 2025, then spent the second half of that season with Las Palmas, where he was relegated. That sequence has left him far down Liverpool’s pecking order.

What Liverpool must weigh

Bajčetić was included in Liverpool’s travel squad for the recent pre-season tour, but he did not feature in any squad for the three games in the US. That suggests he remains part of the wider picture for now, even if a summer move is under consideration.

The key issue is whether Liverpool see more value in a permanent sale or another loan. A temporary move could suit all sides in the short term, but with only one year left on his deal, it also carries a clear risk for Liverpool if no extension is agreed first.

For Getafe, the appeal is obvious. Bajčetić is still a 21 year old with talent and top-level experience, and a move to La Liga could give him the kind of regular football he has not been able to secure consistently since his breakthrough.

What happens next will depend on how Liverpool choose to structure the deal. The interest is there, and the contract situation means this is not a straightforward summer story.
