Ethan Ennis’ next step is a permanent one. After coming through the Manchester United academy, the forward has completed a full-time move to Stockport County, ending his spell at Old Trafford and giving County a young attacker with experience in two of the country’s most recognisable development setups.
The move fits the shape of Ennis’ career so far. He joined Manchester United from Liverpool in 2021, signed his first professional deal with United two weeks after his 17th birthday, and was part of the Under-18s side that won the FA Youth Cup against Nottingham Forest at Old Trafford. Last season, he spent the year on loan at Fleetwood Town, a spell that appears to have strengthened his case for a permanent switch rather than another temporary move.
Why Stockport County wanted him
Stockport County did not hide their view of the signing. Jimmy McNulty described Ennis as a really exciting addition and said his background at Liverpool and Manchester United had given him a unique football education. He also pointed to the forward’s versatility, saying Ennis can operate wide or in central attacking areas, is comfortable on either side and brings pace and ability on the ball.
Jonathan Smith offered a similar assessment, stressing that Ennis had an excellent season on loan at Fleetwood Town, where he played consistently and performed at a high level. Smith also called him a very quick and direct player who wants to attack space and make things happen, which helps explain why Stockport were so determined to turn an initial loan possibility into a permanent deal.
A move that says something about both clubs
For Stockport County, this is a recruitment win as much as a signing. Smith said the club had several conversations with Ennis, and that a few weeks ago he came to the Preston game with him to see the style, structure and environment the club are building. That kind of pitch matters, especially when a player has options and the move begins as a loan discussion before becoming something bigger.
For Ennis, the decision marks a clear break from his Manchester United years and a chance to keep developing in League One. He is still at the stage where pace, direct running and adaptability can carry real value, and both County and McNulty believe those traits can translate into more than just short-term impact.
The bigger question now is not where Ennis came from, but how quickly he can turn promise into output. He arrives with pedigree, loan experience and a strong endorsement from his new club. Stockport have taken a player they believe can help now and grow further later, which is often the best kind of permanent signing.
