The Cubs recalled Owen Miller from Triple-A Iowa on Monday, giving the team another backup option at shortstop after Dansby Swanson's injury opened a spot on the 26-man active roster.
Swanson left Sunday's game after taking an awkward swing, and the team announced that he had suffered an oblique strain. His injured-list placement was made official Monday, and the Cubs quickly moved to cover the opening in the middle infield.
What the Cubs changed on Monday
Miller was one of several roster moves the Cubs made. Javier Assad was recalled from Triple-A Iowa, James Triantos was optioned to Triple-A Iowa, and Kevin Alcántara and Owen Miller were both recalled from Triple-A Iowa. Daniel Palencia was moved to the 60-day injured list to open a 40-man roster spot for Miller.
The Miller move is the clearest short-term answer to Swanson's absence. With Swanson expected to miss 4-6 weeks, the Cubs needed another infielder who can help stabilize the roster while the lineup adjusts.
Why Miller matters now
Miller gives the Cubs a practical depth piece at a position where the team suddenly needed coverage. The move is less about changing the long-term plan and more about making sure the active roster has enough flexibility while Swanson recovers.
For Miller, it is another chance to stick with the Cubs and contribute in a support role. For the team, it is a straightforward response to an injury that changed the infield picture immediately.
The next few weeks will show how the Cubs balance the roster around Swanson's absence, but Monday's moves made the immediate direction clear: Miller is back in the mix, and the club is covering shortstop as it waits for Swanson to return.
