State Farm Dividend Sends $5 Billion To Customers Starting July 31

State Farm dividend payments started on July 31, putting $5 billion in customer cash back into motion for eligible policyholders. The payout goes to people with a personal auto insurance policy active at any point in 2025, and the first notices are already moving out by email or letter.

More than 49 million vehicles are covered by the distribution, and customers whose dividend amount is $10 or more may receive a payment. State Farm said people can check what they will be paid by logging into their account online or through the State Farm app, then choosing a physical check or a digital payment.

Jon Farney on customer value

State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company said the payout is possible because it is a mutual insurance company owned by its policyholders rather than stockholders. Jon Farney, State Farm Mutual president and CEO, said, "As a mutual company with a customer-first focus, State Farm Mutual is able to provide value directly to our customers while maintaining financial strength to keep our promises in the future".

That structure is the reason the money is being sent back to policyholders instead of being held for outside owners. For a customer with a qualifying auto policy, the dividend is based on the premium paid during 2025, not on whether a claim was filed.

4% to 10% by state

The payment formula varies by state, ranging from 4% to 10% of a premium, so two customers with similar coverage can still see different amounts. A dividend that starts at $10 or more is enough to qualify, but the eventual check can be larger or smaller depending on the state percentage applied to the premium paid for the qualifying policy.

Because the payout is tied to premium rather than a flat amount, the quickest estimate comes from the customer’s own 2025 auto premium. A $10 threshold also means some policyholders will qualify only after the percentage calculation is applied to their account.

Several months to complete

The distribution process is expected to take several months to complete, and State Farm says the payout will not affect insurance rates. It also said cashing the check will not raise future premium rates, and customers who need more information can call 1-888-808-9532.

For eligible drivers, the immediate step is simple: check the account notice, then log in online or use the State Farm app to see the payment amount and select how to receive it. The part still left to watch is the size of each individual dividend, since the 4% to 10% range can make the final number much smaller than the headline $5 billion.
