Brentford have taken a clear long-term view on Yunus Emre Konak, tying the midfielder down to a new contract before sending him out on loan to Lincoln City. It is the sort of decision that says as much about development as it does about immediate squad planning.
For Konak, the move offers what Brentford believe he needs most right now: first-team football. For Brentford, it keeps a highly rated young player under contract while giving him a platform to keep progressing in a competitive senior environment.
A player Brentford have tracked closely
Keith Andrews made it plain that Konak has impressed those inside the club for some time. He said he liked him “a lot” and noted that he had seen his development closely, going back to the period when he was set-piece coach. That kind of familiarity matters, because it shows this is not a sudden reaction to one good spell.
Andrews also praised Konak as a young man, pointing out that he arrived in England not speaking much English and has become a popular figure in the squad because he is “all in” on Brentford. The message is simple: this is a player the club trust, both on and off the pitch.
Why the loan matters now
Konak’s path has already given Brentford plenty to consider. He made his professional debut for Sivasspor in August 2023 at the age of 17 and started each of the club’s next 16 league games. Later that year, he was included in ’s list of the best young players in world football born in 2006. Brentford then signed him from Sivasspor in January 2024.
His first-team breakthrough in west London was delayed by injury, but there were still important milestones along the way. He was named in Brentford’s matchday squad for the final game of the 2023/24 Premier League season against Newcastle United, then made his competitive debut as a late substitute in a 1-0 Carabao Cup win at Colchester United in August 2024. The following month he made his Premier League debut away at Tottenham Hotspur.
That background helps explain why Brentford are comfortable with the latest step. Andrews said it is “really important” that Konak continues his development by playing first-team football in an environment that should be good for him and beneficial to his game. He added that the club saw the benefits of his spell at Oxford United last season, when he featured 16 times, and that the easiest option would have been to keep him around the squad, but that the better one is to let him take the next step.
Lincoln City get a player with momentum
Phil Giles backed that view by saying Konak had earned his new contract on the back of his performances over the last 12 months. He also said the midfielder had a very good loan at Oxford United and that Brentford want him to build on that at Lincoln, who were keen to bring him in for the season.
That is the key point in the deal. Brentford are not closing the door on Konak. They are protecting the future while asking him to prove, again, that he can handle the demands of regular football. Giles said that by signing the contract before the loan move was completed, Brentford are showing they believe Konak can play regularly for the club in the future.
For Konak, that means the season at Lincoln City is more than a temporary move. It is a chance to turn promise into consistency, and to show that the progress seen at Oxford can carry over into another campaign in Sky Bet League One before the next stage of his career comes into view.
