Apple iPhone 18 Pro release date chatter is being distorted by a rumor about TSMC's 2nm process. Macworld says the widely circulated A20 Pro claim is really about manufacturing technology, not a direct leak of chip-level gains for Apple.
That distinction matters because the figures tied to The Fixed Focus Digital on Weibo are process-node numbers, not a guarantee for the A20 Pro itself. Jason, a technology writer with more than 25 years of experience, says the chip will be faster, but not necessarily by the exact amount people keep repeating.
TSMC 2nm and A20 Pro
The Fixed Focus Digital says TSMC's new 2nm process delivers about 18% performance improvement and about 30% lower power use. In practical terms, those figures describe what an identical chip can do on a newer manufacturing process, not what every finished chip will automatically deliver.
Apple is expected to be the first large-scale customer to use TSMC's new 2nm process. For readers tracking the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone Ultra rumors, that means the headline numbers are a starting point, not a promise.
Jason on A20 Pro gains
Jason draws a sharper line between the process and the chip, saying, "Will the A20 Pro be faster? Definitely!" He adds, "Will it be 18 percent faster? Maybe!" because Apple is also changing the design around the silicon.
Those changes include a likely higher transistor count, architectural changes to the CPU, GPU, and Neural Engine cores, and possible cache changes.
