London Fire Brigade tackled a house fire on London Road in Stanmore on Monday evening after reports came in at around 7.10pm. The two-storey property lost its roof and most of the first floor. No injuries were reported, and crews had the blaze under control by around 10pm.

Eight fire engines and around 60 firefighters went to the scene, with crews from Stanmore fire station, Mill Hill fire station, Harrow fire station, Hendon fire station and Wembley fire station attending alongside firefighters from Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue. The scale of that response points to how quickly a house fire can move from a single property incident to a multi-station operation.

The fire service said the property had smoke alarms that did not activate. In practice, that can mean alarms were unable to warn anyone in time, which leaves no margin for a fire to spread through a roof and upper floor before crews arrive. A separate fire on the White City Estate, where about 100 firefighters attended on June 20, shows the wider burden these incidents can place on crews across London in the same week.

London Fire Brigade investigation

London Fire Brigade said the cause of the fire is under investigation. That leaves the immediate priorities for the property’s occupants or owners centered on assessing the structural damage and working through the state of the home after the roof and most of the first floor were destroyed.

The unanswered question now is what started the fire at the Stanmore house. Until that is established, the only fixed facts are the damage, the response and the fast timeline: reported around 7.10pm, over by around 10pm, with no injuries reported.
