The Green Bay Packers have claimed rookie edge defender Arden Walker off waivers from the Minnesota Vikings, giving the 23-year-old another chance in the NFC North before the teams meet in Week 1.
It is a small roster move on paper, but one that carries a little extra edge because it shifts a developmental pass rusher from one division rival to another. Walker had only recently joined Minnesota after the 2026 NFL draft, yet his stay ended quickly when the Vikings made room by waiving him on August 17 and signing Kenny Dyson.
Why Walker was an interesting waiver pickup
Walker arrives in Green Bay with a frame that fits the position: 6-foot-2 and 250 pounds. He also brings a college résumé that suggests there is something to work with. After beginning his career at Missouri, he spent three seasons at Colorado and finished with 36 games, 15 starts, 91 tackles, 11 tackles for loss, eight sacks, 14 quarterback hurries and two forced fumbles.
That production will not be ignored by a team looking for depth and upside along the edge. For the Packers, the appeal is obvious: claim a young defender who has already spent the offseason in a rival’s defensive program and see whether there is a longer-term role to be found.
A crowded room in Minnesota created the opening
Minnesota’s outside-linebacker depth had become crowded, with established veterans and young players competing for places. In that setting, a rookie can lose ground quickly, especially when he has only had a short runway to show his best work.
That is the reality Walker faced. The Vikings brought him in immediately after the draft, but the window was brief, and once he was waived, Green Bay moved fast.
The timing adds a neat layer to the early-season picture. The Packers will visit Minnesota on September 13 in Week 1, and the same teams will meet again at Lambeau Field on November 15. A player who spent his first NFL stretch in Minnesota could now be trying to force his way into Green Bay’s plans against the very team that let him go.
For now, the move is about opportunity. Walker has gone from an undrafted rookie in Minnesota to a waiver claim in Green Bay, and in a division where every detail matters, that gives the Packers one more name worth watching.
