James May says no Clarkson-Hammond reunion is planned

James May has ruled out any immediate on-screen reunion with Jeremy Clarkson and Richard Hammond. Speaking to LBC recently, he said there is nothing planned, even as he left the door open with one warning: “You should never say never should you because then somebody will dig it up and hold it against you, but there is nothing planned.”

23 years, then 2024

The update lands after a 23-year television partnership that ran across 15 years on Top Gear and eight years on The Grand Tour. That run ended in 2024 with the final special, One For The Road, so May’s remarks are the clearest signal yet that there is no new project waiting in the wings for the trio.

May on timing

May said it is “slightly difficult” to envisage the three stars working together again and added that “we’re knocking on a bit”. He also said there comes a point where you should let things lie, and in showbusiness you should leave the audience wanting more. That is a neat business rule as much as a creative one: once a long-running act has finished cleanly, extending it can weaken the ending that made it stick.

Landing it safely

May was blunt about the finish line. “The most difficult thing we had to do was to land it safely and not fly it into the cliffs,” he said, adding: “And I think we just about did.” He also warned that “if you go on too long, you do end up flying it into the cliff.”

For readers hoping for a quick reset, the direct answer is no: there is no reunion plan on the table. The practical takeaway is simpler than the nostalgia around it — the trio’s future together now rests on a possibility May himself treats as distant, not a project in motion.
