Kyler Gordon calf injury has no timeline, Ben Johnson says

Ben Johnson has given the Bears no firm update on Kyler Gordon, saying the defensive back is working toward a rehab plan for a calf injury but that there is still no timeline for his return. With the secondary already stretched, it is another reminder that Chicago’s defensive backfield is being tested before the preseason game at Cincinnati.

Gordon was dealing with the calf problem before training camp, and Johnson’s latest comments suggest the Bears are still taking a cautious approach. That matters because the injuries have not stopped with one player. Tyrique Stevenson did not practice on Monday and did not play on Saturday, while Cam Lewis has been pushed into a starting safety or slot role as the group absorbs the disruption.

Johnson: Gordon is still working through the plan

Asked about Gordon, Johnson said there is a plan in place and that the player is working toward it. Al Harris added: “He’s not on vacation or anything…he’s doing his part.” That is about as much clarity as the Bears can offer right now, but it does at least confirm Gordon is active in the process rather than sidelined without direction.

The key point is the absence of a return date. Johnson made clear there is no timeline for Gordon to come back, which leaves the Bears planning week to week with little certainty about when the secondary will be at full strength again. For a unit already leaning on backups and role changes, that is not a small detail.

A secondary under pressure before Cincinnati

Johnson also looked ahead to the trip to Cincinnati, saying: “I'm excited to go down to Cincinnati, and they've got a lot of new talent on defense that we're going to have to be on our Ps and Qs if we want to have success against,”. He added that the test would help shape where the Bears are as an offense right now, a useful reminder that these preseason games are still being used to measure the full picture.

For Chicago, though, the defensive story is the one that stands out. The Bears are already dealing with multiple injuries in the secondary, and the uncertainty around Kyler Gordon only adds to it. Johnson may not have a timeline, but he does have a clear reality to manage: his back end is short-handed, and the next stretch will keep asking backups to behave like starters.
