US Condemns Israeli Base Strike on Abu al-Duhur Airbase

The US condemned Israeli airstrikes on Abu al-Duhur Airbase in Syria after eight strikes hit the base's runway and storage facility on Tuesday. No injuries were reported, but the strike reopened a dispute over whether Syria was about to breach a security arrangement near the Turkish border.

Tom Barrack, the US ambassador in Turkey and special envoy for Syria and Iraq, posted on X that, "We are deeply concerned that the confirmed Israeli airstrikes on Abu al-Duhur Airbase constitute an unnecessary escalation that does not advance regional stability". The airbase has been out of service as a dedicated military airfield since 2013, and rebel forces seized control of Abu Duhur in December 2024.

Abu Duhur Airbase and Turkey

Abu Duhur sits 70km from the Turkish border, which makes the strike more than a local battlefield event. Syria has been trying to rebuild military facilities damaged during the blitz offensive that overthrew Bashar al-Assad's government within two weeks, and the Turkish military has provided assistance to Syria since the overthrow of Assad. For readers following wider regional fallout, the same pattern of pressure and response is playing out in other theaters, too, including a separate report on U.S. military base Diego Garcia and on the Mets' recent run, where security and logistics are shaping outcomes in different ways.

Israel, Syria, and Turkey

Benjamin Netanyahu's office said, "Israel and Syria agreed to a status quo in security matters, which Syria was on the verge of breaching by permitting Turkish troops to deploy at an airbase near Aleppo." Syria and Turkey blamed the Israeli military for the attacks. Turkey's Communications Directorate, quoted by the Anadolu state news agency, replied: "The frivolous allegations put forward by the Israeli Prime Minister's office aim to legitimize Israel's unlawful airstrikes targeting Syria's sovereignty and territorial integrity."

Syria's foreign ministry called the attacks an unjustified act of aggression imperilling regional security and stability. Since Ahmed al-Sharaa came to power, Israel has carried out airstrikes on parts of central and southern Syria, and Tom Barrack said Ahmed al-Sharaa has neither adopted nor maintained proxy forces and has repeatedly signaled a preference for de-escalation with Israel.

US diplomacy after the strike

The United States said it would continue to offer to host diplomatic discussions between both sides to address kinetic frustrations. That keeps a channel open even as the public language hardens, and the immediate practical issue is whether the dispute over Turkish troops was a real trigger or a justification after the fact. The next move now sits with the diplomatic channel the United States says it is still willing to host.
