Coventry City have reached an agreement to sign Sidiki Cherif from Fenerbahce in a deal worth £20.4 million, adding another attacking option as Frank Lampard continues to reshape the squad ahead of the new season.
The move comes after a busy summer in which Coventry have already added Frank Onyeka, Gustavo Hamer, Aurele Amenda, Loum Tchaouna, Carl Rushworth and Caleb Yirenkyi. With six new signings already through the door, Lampard is clearly not settling for a narrow rebuild.
Lampard keeps pushing the project forward
That fits the broader picture of what Coventry are trying to do after promotion back to the Premier League in the 2025/26 campaign. Lampard steered the Sky Blues back to the top flight after 25 years away, and the club now appears determined to give him the tools to compete properly at that level.
Speaking about his experience at the club, Lampard said: “When I came to Coventry, I was aware of their history as a football club as far as being a top tier team when I grew up.” He added: “I was aware of it from the outside, but didn’t realize the strength of support from inside the city that the team and the club has.”
That sense of connection matters because Coventry are no longer just celebrating promotion. They are building for survival, and then for something more lasting.
Why Cherif matters now
At 19 years old, Cherif arrives as part of a summer that has already changed the shape of the squad. For a newly promoted side, depth and energy are not luxuries. They are essential, especially when the opening-day game against Arsenal on August 21 is looming.
Lampard has spoken about how the club’s journey has helped strengthen the bond between players and supporters. He said: “That connection between players and fans has really grown on and off the pitch.” He also added: “Obviously football is the important thing, getting to the Premier League was a huge deal for us, and now it’s nice being part of a journey where the club is trying to grow further.”
That is the key point here. Coventry are not making signings for the sake of numbers. They are trying to build a squad with enough quality and competition to cope with the demands of the Premier League.
What comes next
Cherif’s arrival would take Coventry’s summer business to another level, with reports also suggesting Taiwo Awoniyi could still be added. Either way, the message is clear: Lampard and Coventry are moving quickly, and they are doing so with purpose before the season gets underway.
