Ed Orgeron has been a constant presence at LSU since Lane Kiffin announced his return to Baton Rouge in May, and his visibility has become one of the more interesting subplots around the program. The former LSU head coach is back around the football operation in a support role, with his presence now being felt in recruiting-related settings and during Fall Camp.
That matters because Orgeron is no longer being discussed simply as an LSU figure from the past. His roster listing places him under football support staff rather than the coaching staff, which helps explain why he can still be seen around the program without being part of the day-to-day coaching structure in the traditional sense.
Why Orgeron’s role still matters
Since May, Orgeron has been around LSU’s Elite Football Camps, NIL signings and Fall Camp, giving the impression of someone who is not just connected to the program, but actively involved in the wider support operation. Thus far in Fall Camp, he has been very active.
For LSU, that is a useful presence. Orgeron’s profile remains strong, and his ties to the program give him an immediate credibility that can still matter in conversations with players and families. His connection to recruiting and defense also helps explain why LSU would want him visible around the program at key moments.
Kiffin’s view of the fit
Lane Kiffin has described the arrangement as ideal for everyone involved. He said, “I think it's the perfect situation for everybody involved,” and added that Orgeron’s bond with LSU and the state makes him an easy sell in recruiting.
Kiffin pointed to Orgeron’s passion for the state, the players of the state and his championship success at LSU as reasons the fit makes sense. He also noted that, working for him, Orgeron would be in a strong position to tell recruits why LSU remains the place to be.
That is the clearest reason Orgeron’s return has drawn attention. It is not just a symbolic appearance from a former head coach. It is a visible role around LSU football at a time when the program continues to use every available advantage in recruiting and preparation.
With Fall Camp underway and LSU still leaning on Orgeron’s presence, the question now is not whether he will be seen around the program. Since May, that has already been answered. The more relevant point is how much value LSU continues to draw from a familiar figure whose influence still carries weight inside Baton Rouge.
