Bradley Martin warns Uss Abraham Lincoln Conditions expose Navy limits

USS Abraham Lincoln conditions aboard the carrier have included crew morale problems, shortages of basic supplies, and maintenance issues during a deployment that has broken the naval record for the longest period without a port stop. Bradley Martin said the result is straightforward: “The end state is that you will encounter readiness issues.”

The retired US Navy captain and senior policy researcher at the RAND Corporation also said, “The navy exists to project power, and it exists to fill gaps, but you do have to deal with the fact that there are limits.” The deployment has lasted since November 2025, and family members said some sailors faced troubling instances of personnel attempting to jump overboard.

Tuesday letter to CENTCOM

On Tuesday, Democratic lawmakers published a letter saying the Department is not adapting quickly enough to the conditions in the CENTCOM area of responsibility. They said similar conditions were reported on the USS Gerald Ford and the USS Abraham Lincoln, turning the carrier issue into a wider question about how long the US can keep multiple ships at sea under current wartime demands.

One of those pressure points is supply. A US military official told that the navy has been forced to use Diego Garcia as its main supply hub, and that is about 3,540km, or 2,200 miles, away from where the USS Abraham Lincoln and the USS George HW Bush have been operating near Iran. The distance puts a hard limit on how quickly fuel, parts, and basic stores can reach the ships.

USS Gerald Ford rotation

The USS Gerald Ford was deployed for 326 days before its rotation in May, adding a recent benchmark for how long the Navy has been asked to sustain a carrier at sea. The US has 11 active aircraft carriers, and a carrier strike group typically includes one cruiser, four to six destroyers, 75 aircraft, and 7,500 sailors and US Marines.

Alexandru Hudisteanu, a maritime security expert and former Romanian naval officer, described the problem in terms of military planning, saying, “There’s a maxim that’s quite famous in the industry of military” and “They say that amateurs talk strategies, while”. The reported conditions aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln suggest the practical test is no longer just presence in the Middle East, but whether the Navy can keep ships supplied and crews stable while operating so far from the main resupply point.
