When does the new Fortnite season come out? Fortnite: Overdrive begins on August 20, and Tom Phillips says players have only a couple of days left to finish the current battle pass and collect remaining Sprites. The new season arrives after a weekend tease and a fresh look at the skins Epic Games has lined up for the pass.
Tom Phillips on August 20
Tom Phillips, IGN's News Editor, identified August 20 as the start date later this week. That gives players a short runway to clear out the current pass before Overdrive resets the season structure and shifts attention to the next set of unlocks.
The timing matters because the existing pass is already near its end. If players want the last Sprites tied to the current season, they have only a couple of days to grind levels before Fortnite: Overdrive takes over.
Epic Games' battle pass roster
Epic Games highlighted a pass built around legally distinct video game parodies rather than straight copies. Bastion, K1TTYW1NS, Wrixel, Grace Crowne, Mali and Phantom fill out the Overdrive battle pass, giving players clear earn-through-play targets instead of forcing the crossover content into a single premium purchase.
That split is the story's wrinkle. Fans had expected more of the teased famous faces to land in the battle pass, but the roster shown so far leans toward parody versions, while the real crossover names sit on the broader season side of the reveal.
Sonic and Geno
Players have already seen crossover teases for Sonic the Hedgehog, Crash Bandicoot, Kingdom Hearts, Persona, Tetris, Pac-Man, Mega Man and 99 Nights in the Forest. Sega-sanctioned Sonic the Hedgehog is joined by Geno, and an official Fortnite and Sonic comic ties Geno to Dr. Robotnik.
The playable versions of Sonic, Knuckles and Shadow will be a more humanoid-sized android imbued with the actual Sonic and crew's bio-data. That setup keeps the licensed characters distinct from the parody skins in the pass, which is the part players need to read carefully before they decide whether to level up or wait for shop rotations.
Fortnite: Overdrive kicks off on August 20, so the practical move is simple: clear the current pass now if you still want its rewards, because the new season is about to replace the old progression track.
