Archie Gray: Maddison, Fernandes and Udogie available for Brentford opener

Archie Gray is among the Tottenham names drawing attention this week, but the bigger immediate update is that James Maddison, Mateus Fernandes and Destiny Udogie are all back in training and available for selection for the Brentford opener.

That is a useful development for Tottenham Hotspur after a preseason in which injuries repeatedly shaped the conversation. The issue was not new, either, with the club dealing with an injury problem that had carried over from the previous two seasons into the summer.

Mateus Fernandes had been managing a calf injury during preseason, while James Maddison was handled carefully after missing nearly all of last season because of an ACL injury. Destiny Udogie, meanwhile, did not play a single minute while recovering from muscular injuries.

There were at least encouraging signs before the season began. In the second Hoffenheim friendly at Hotspur Way, Fernandes and Maddison both started and played 45 minutes, which suggested the club was easing them back toward full involvement rather than rushing them.

What Tottenham now have available

By the time of the Brentford match, all three had returned to training and were available for selection. That gives Spurs a few more options for a season opener that always comes with selection questions, especially when players are still being brought up to speed.

The timing also matters because registration for weekend matches was due by Friday at noon. With that deadline in place, Tottenham were able to assess exactly which players could be included for the trip to Brentford and how much depth they had across the squad.

It is also a small but meaningful boost for Roberto De Zerbi, whose squad planning had seemingly stalled in the previous few weeks. Having Fernandes, Maddison and Udogie back available at least gives Tottenham more flexibility in the opening match, whether that is in the starting XI or through late-game substitutions.

Spurs still have work to do to get everyone fully settled, but after five preseason friendlies and another round of injury management, simply having three more senior options available is a better place to start than the alternative.
