Dave Filoni revealed the Star Wars Ahsoka Season 2 trailer and release date at D23 in Anaheim, California. The footage brings Grand Admiral Thrawn back into the story and sets Ahsoka season 2 on the trail of what happens after his return.
Rosario Dawson returns as Ahsoka Tano, the character last seen traveling to Peridea three years earlier. At the end of the first season, Ahsoka and Sabine Wren were stranded there while Ezra Bridger and Grand Admiral Thrawn escaped back to the known galaxy.
D23 and the new trailer
The trailer makes Thrawn the center of the next chapter. It shows him declaring war on the Rebel Alliance, a step that pushes the story beyond the search-and-rescue frame of the first season and into open conflict.
D23 also put the release date in the same reveal, giving Lucasfilm its next major update on the series. For viewers following the story through the first season, the practical change is simple: the next phase now has a public launch point and a clearer conflict.
Thrawn, the New Republic
The footage ties Thrawn’s return to the New Republic and to the wider Imperial remnant effort. Imperial remnant warlords have been plotting in secret to destroy the New Republic and restore the Empire, part of Emperor Palpatine’s contingency plan to return and rule.
Brendol Hux is among the Imperial remnant figures who believed those goals depended on Thrawn returning. Thrawn also forged an alliance with the Nightsisters and worked on restoring his Star Destroyer before taking up the title of “Heir of the Empire.”
Rebel Alliance and sequel timeline
The complication is that Thrawn has declared war, while the galaxy after the Empire’s defeat is described as a time of peace, with the Empire and its sympathizers thought to be long gone. The sequel trilogy does not mention a galactic war on that scale, so Ahsoka season 2 now has to sit inside a timeline that already shows Thrawn and Ezra disappearing in 1 BBY, the Empire falling in 5 ABY, and the later era moving forward without that conflict on record.
The trailer suggests Thrawn’s return will press hardest on Hera Syndulla, Garazeb Orrelios, Ezra Bridger, and the New Republic. That leaves the next season to answer how Ahsoka Tano and Sabine Wren re-enter the story from Peridea while the war Thrawn declared spreads into the known galaxy.
