Saquon Barkley believes the New England Patriots have more than a few reasons to feel optimistic. After two joint practices against the Philadelphia Eagles, the three-time Pro Bowl selection said he has nothing but respect for the Patriots and thinks they have a good chance of going very far.
That is useful outside validation for a team that has spent the summer talking openly about championship expectations. The Patriots believe they have the talent to return to the Super Bowl, and Barkley’s view carries real weight after he saw them up close at Gillette Stadium.
Barkley did not hide his feelings about the format, either. He said he hates joint practice, adding that one day is enough in an ego-filled sport where emotions can run high. The sessions were not entirely peaceful, with minor confrontations and a special-teams skirmish on Wednesday that required Mike Vrabel to help separate players.
Barkley's respect for the Patriots is the real takeaway
The key point is not that Barkley is guaranteeing anything. It is that a recent Super Bowl LIX winner walked away from two days of work and saw enough to believe the Patriots can compete at a high level.
That matters because New England are trying to prove their ambition is matched by substance. The gap between August and Super Bowl LXI at SoFi Stadium remains a long one, but the Patriots have at least shown they are willing to speak about a bigger target.
Barkley also admitted joint practice can be uncomfortable because so much of the work comes with pride attached. That is part of why his praise stands out. It was not the polished answer of someone trying to be diplomatic; it was the reaction of a player who has seen enough to respect what the Patriots are building.
What comes next for the Patriots?
The schedule now gives New England a chance to turn those summer talking points into something more concrete. They host Philadelphia on Saturday night in a preseason game before concluding their preseason schedule against the Cleveland Browns next Thursday.
For the Patriots, the bigger message is simple. The words of an opponent matter when they come from a player of Barkley’s standing, and his verdict was clear: New England have a chance to go very far if they keep building in the right way.
