Travis Kelce showed up at Arrowhead Stadium on August 15 with a familiar training camp twist: the beard was gone and the mustache was back.
The Kansas City Chiefs tight end has made the look part of his recurring offseason routine, and fans immediately noticed the return of his “El Travador” alter ego ahead of the Chiefs’ preseason opener against the Los Angeles Rams.
A familiar camp look for Travis Kelce
Kelce first became tied to the “El Travador” nickname in 2021, when the mustache started to become part of the image. It has since turned into one of those small Chiefs training camp details that gets extra attention every summer.
Three days before August 15, Kelce spoke to reporters at training camp in St. Joseph, Missouri, with a full beard. Before that, he had reported to camp with both a beard and mustache. By the time he got to Arrowhead Stadium, the beard was gone and the mustache was back.
Why Chiefs fans noticed
For some Chiefs fans, the mustache has taken on a life of its own. It has become a superstition of sorts, with the “El Travador” look treated as a possible good omen for the season.
That reaction has only grown around Kelce, a 36-year-old who remains one of the team’s most recognizable players. The look even drew comments from fans and around the organization, including the line, “It’s not training camp without El Travador,” and another reaction that said, “El Travador has returned.”
Jordan Johnson captured the mood from one fan perspective, saying, “This is not Travis Kelce. This is El Travador.” Johnson also tied the look to bigger expectations, saying it “absolutely gives me hope.”
A small detail, but one that gets attention
Kelce has even acknowledged the connection before. At an October 2023 Chiefs press conference, he said, “I’ll tell you what, that ‘stache and the 87 jersey was pretty iconic there for a bit,” and added, “I had it when I met Taylor for the first time.”
That context matters because Kelce married Taylor Swift on July 3, adding another layer of attention to anything he does during training camp. A facial-hair change might not affect the Chiefs’ season on its own, but it is the kind of small development that fans turn into a bigger story when the team is heading into a preseason game.
And for some supporters, that bigger story is simple: if the mustache is back, maybe the good feelings are too.
