Amy Hunt backed up her remarkable European Championships week by finishing second in the women's 200m at the Diamond League meeting in Lausanne, crossing the line in 22.32 seconds. It was another strong sign that the Briton is carrying real momentum into the closing stages of the season, even if the photo finish went against her this time.
Hunt arrived in Switzerland on the back of a breakthrough performance in Birmingham last week, where she won four gold medals at the European Championships. That made her the first athlete to win four gold medals in a single edition of the European Championships, and it framed Lausanne as another test of how far that confidence could take her against a deeper international field.
Lausanne decided by the finest margin
The race itself was tight enough to need a photo finish, with Favour Ofili taking victory ahead of Hunt. Shericka Jackson and Brittany Brown were also part of the contest, underlining the level of competition Hunt was facing at Diamond League standard.
For Hunt, the result will still feel like a positive one. Finishing second in 22.32 seconds after such a demanding championship week shows she is not simply recovering from Birmingham, but remains capable of running at the front of major races immediately afterwards.
What comes next for Hunt?
The Diamond League schedule now moves quickly on. The next meeting is set for Silesia, Poland on Sunday 23 August, before Zurich on Thursday 27 August and the final meet of the season in Brussels, Belgium on the weekend of 4 and 5 September. After Lausanne, Hunt has already shown she can convert a championship surge into form on the regular circuit, and the next few weeks will tell us whether that level can hold through to the end of the year.
