Simon Murray has spoken publicly for the first time since suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury in Dundee’s 3-0 League Cup defeat at Aberdeen, saying he has been overwhelmed by the support from inside and outside the club.
The Dundee striker and captain left the field on a stretcher last weekend after collapsing in the first half, clutching his left knee after landing awkwardly near the penalty area. It was a painful end to a difficult night for Dundee, but Murray’s social media message has turned attention to the response he has received since then.
Overwhelmed by the response
Murray thanked everyone who had contacted him over the last few days, saying the support had been “incredibly overwhelming” and had meant a great deal to him and his family. He also passed on his appreciation to the gaffer, coaching staff and teammates, describing them as “what a group”.
That kind of message matters because it shows how strongly Murray is connected to the people around him. In a spell when an injury of this sort can feel isolating, the reaction from Dundee and beyond appears to have given him real strength.
Respect between Dundee and Dundee United
His post also referred to the coming game as one of the biggest of the season and one of the best rivalries in football. Murray noted that Jim Goodwin and Dundee United had contacted him with their support, saying that it showed the respect the two clubs have for each other.
It was a striking detail to include in the middle of a personal setback. The tone of the message was not angry or frustrated. Instead, it was appreciative, measured and focused on recovery.
Work to do before a return
Murray also made clear how much playing for and captaining Dundee means to him. He described it as one of the biggest privileges of his footballing career and said he would be working harder than ever to get back to doing that as soon as possible.
For Dundee, the immediate concern is the absence of a key figure after a damaging cup defeat. For Murray, the task is simpler to state but far harder to complete: recover properly and return when the time is right. Until then, his message suggests he will be leaning on the support around him as he begins that process.
