Wisconsin Volleyball gets early rematch with Kentucky in AVCA First Serve after semifinal meeting

Wisconsin Volleyball got an immediate early-season test on Friday night, opening the new college volleyball season against Kentucky at 9 p.m. ET in the AVCA First Serve. It was a familiar matchup with a fresh setting: the teams had already met in the national semifinals, where Kentucky won a tight 3-2 battle.

The rematch mattered because it came so early and because both programs looked different from the last time they shared the court. Wisconsin entered the season with a revamped roster that included nine freshmen and two new transfers, while Kentucky was without Eva Hudson, who had set a Kentucky single-season record with 546 kills. That combination made the opener less about carrying over the past and more about seeing how each team handled a new version of itself.

A familiar matchup, but not the same teams

This was the fifth time Wisconsin and Kentucky had met at the net, and the recent history gave the opener extra weight. Kentucky’s 3-2 semifinal win set the tone for the rematch, but the roster changes on both sides meant Friday’s meeting was also an early look at how each program might evolve this season.

For Wisconsin, Charlie Fuerbringer was once again a key piece at setter. She entered the season after earning First-Team All-Big Ten honors in 2025 and had already shown what she could do in the previous matchup against Kentucky, finishing with 63 assists. That kind of production gave Wisconsin a steady point of reference even as the roster around her changed.

What the opener said about both teams

The matchup fit the profile of an early-season showcase. Wisconsin and Kentucky were meeting before the season had even settled, and that made the result less about one night and more about an early read on two high-level teams. Kentucky had the advantage of recent postseason success in the series, while Wisconsin had the chance to measure a reworked lineup against a familiar opponent right away.

Friday’s schedule also started with Louisville beating Texas A&M 3-1 in the first match of the college volleyball season, setting up a strong opening night for the sport. But the spotlight was clearly on Wisconsin Volleyball and Kentucky, a rematch that gave both sides a meaningful benchmark before the season moved forward.
