The New York Jets signed wide receiver Junior Bergen and waived-injured DT Sheffield, making a roster move that adds a versatile former FCS standout while ending Sheffield's immediate availability because of injury.
What Bergen brings
Bergen arrives in New York after a college career at Montana that made him one of the most productive return threats in the FCS. He played four seasons from 2021-24, caught 145 passes for 1,777 receiving yards and 13 touchdowns, and added 139 rushing attempts for 577 yards and four more scores. He also produced eight punt return touchdowns, the kind of all-purpose value that helped make him a seventh-round pick at No. 252 overall by the San Francisco 49ers in 2025.
At 5-foot-9 and 184 pounds, Bergen fits the profile of a smaller, quicker offensive player who can contribute in multiple ways. His college numbers included a 16.71-yard average on punt returns, which helps explain why teams have continued to give him opportunities.
Jets make another roster change
The move follows Bergen's previous time in the San Francisco organization. He spent time on the 49ers' practice squad last season and later signed a reserve/futures contract in January. Now he gets another chance with the Jets, who have been sorting through personnel throughout May.
Sheffield's path is different. He was one of 12 undrafted free agents to sign with the Jets in May, and most of his return production came during his single season at North Texas in 2024. The waived-injured designation means his departure is tied to injury status, not just a standard roster cut.
For the Jets, the transaction is straightforward: Bergen gives them another look at a return-capable receiver with college production, while Sheffield's roster spot opens because of injury. It is a small move on paper, but one that changes the competition at the back end of the roster.
