“Around 3:39am this morning, a collision took place involving a police vehicle and a Volkswagen Passat on the A66 in South Bank,” a Cleveland Police spokesman said. “Sadly, the collision has resulted in multiple fatalities.”

Normanby Road and Church Lane

The closure covered the stretch of the A66 between Normanby Road and Church Lane, leaving traffic unable to pass through that section while police and emergency crews worked at the crash site. Cleveland Police also said, “There are significant emergency vehicles on the scene, and the road will remain closed for some time.”

For drivers, that meant using alternative routes. Cleveland Police told the public, “The public are asked to use alternative routes.” The closure affected one of the main links through the area and left the scene under a large emergency response.

Cleveland Police families

Police said they were working to identify the victims and contact their families. That step sits at the center of what happens next after a fatal crash, because the road response and the family notifications are moving at the same time.

Cleveland Police also described the incident as “a quickly evolving incident” and asked members of the public to “respectfully avoid speculation.” The immediate unanswered point is how many people were killed in the collision.
