Peterborough United will try to reset quickly on Saturday when they host Mansfield Town in their first home league match of the 2026-27 League One season.
Luke Williams' side opened the campaign with a 2-0 defeat at Bradford City, a result that left plenty of work to do early in the season. It was not the start Peterborough wanted after a mixed pre-season, especially with Williams now entering his first full season in charge.
The wider picture is also important. Peterborough finished 18th last season and ended the 2025-26 campaign on a nine-game winless streak, so the challenge for Williams is not only to improve results, but to create some momentum at the Weston Homes Stadium.
Mansfield arrive with early points already on the board
Mansfield Town will make the trip after a stronger opening weekend. Nigel Clough's team beat Doncaster Rovers 2-1 in their League One opener, giving them a positive start to a third consecutive campaign at this level and a sixth full term under Clough.
Their midweek EFL Trophy trip ended differently, with a 4-1 loss to Manchester City Under-21s, but Mansfield still head into this league game with three points from their first league match and a clearer sense of early rhythm than Peterborough.
That matters because Mansfield were steady enough last season to finish 10th with 65 points, while also conceding only 50 league goals. They were not far from the play-off picture, and that consistency has given Clough a stable base to work from again.
Team news and the early-season angle
Peterborough will be without David Okagbue, which opens the door for another option to come into the defence. One possible replacement is Sam Hughes, who could be asked to step in as Williams looks for a more secure back line after the opening-day loss.
The matchup now has the feel of an early test for both sides. Peterborough need a response in front of their home supporters, while Mansfield are looking to build on a winning start and keep early pressure on the teams around the top half of the table.
With the season only just getting underway, the result will not define either club. But for Peterborough, a home win would at least give Williams a better starting point in his first full campaign, and it would quickly change the mood after a flat opener at Bradford City.
