Archivist produced the sort of performance that turns a promising horse into a serious talking point, winning the Sky Bet Strensall Stakes at York by seven and a half lengths. Racing Post Results mattered here because this was not just a narrow Group 3 success on the Knavesmire, but a statement win over nine furlongs after a strong performance at Goodwood earlier in the summer.
Ridden by Callum Rodriguez, Archivist was sent off at 9/1 and travelled with real comfort before pulling away late. After winning the Golden Mile at the Qatar Goodwood Festival at 16/1, he has now backed that up with a dominant display for Wathnan Racing and Hamad Al Jehani, suggesting the recent progress is very real.
Callum Rodriguez: 'A very big performance'
Rodriguez said the horse gave him a markedly better feel than he had done at Goodwood. He felt like a much improved horse again from the horse I sat on at Goodwood, and everything about the York run backed that up.
He switched off lovely from the gates, which mattered on a track where settling early can be crucial. Once Rodriguez asked for an effort, the response was immediate and he's galloped strong through the line.
That is the key point with Archivist. This was not a one-run effort or a horse simply clinging on late. It was a controlled, progressive win that suggested there may still be more to come.
Richard Brown: 'We can have a crack at a big step up in class'
Richard Brown was understandably encouraged, even if the margin still surprised him. Slightly taken us all by surprise, he said, before adding that the team could now be quite brave.
That is a significant shift in tone. A horse who had already shown plenty of promise before joining Wathnan Racing and Hamad Al Jehani now looks capable of testing deeper waters.
Brown also made it clear that a bigger challenge is very much on the table. I think we can probably be quite brave now, he said. I think we can have a crack at a big step up in class.
There was even a touch of frustration in the way the race unfolded, with Brown noting that Callum said 'I went way too soon' but what can he do? He was just travelling. In other words, Archivist still won with authority even before everything had worked out perfectly in the saddle.
For Racing Post Results followers, that is what makes this such an eye-catching performance. Archivist has gone from a 16/1 success at the Qatar Goodwood Festival to a 9/1 Group 3 win at York, and the next target may now tell us how high he can climb.
