Ryan Gold, the team director of college scouting, was suspended by the NFL in July for violating the league’s gambling policy. The league said its investigation found that Gold provided draft information before it was public and also participated in parlay bets on NFL and college games. Gold is appealing the suspension, and reported on Sept. 23 that he has a hearing scheduled.

Thomas Mills said the Massachusetts Gaming Commission’s interest would be “in response to reports of unusual betting in the Commonwealth, not necessarily one individual.” That distinction is important, because it leaves room for a wider inquiry while still sitting in the shadow of the Gold case.

Gold’s legal and professional position remains serious. He has already been suspended by the NFL, he is appealing that punishment, and the league’s findings have placed his conduct under a harsh spotlight. Attorney Mike Caspino has said “the accusations against Gold are false,” which shows the dispute is set to continue.
