The Cardinals Football gambling case has taken another step, with the Massachusetts Gaming Commission confirming it is looking into unusual betting in the state that could be connected to suspended Arizona Cardinals executive Ryan Gold. With an existing investigation already open in Arizona, the matter now stretches across two states and adds fresh pressure to a case that is already under appeal.
Ryan Gold, the team director of college scouting, was suspended by the NFL in July for violating the league’s gambling policy. The league said its investigation found that Gold provided draft information before it was public and also participated in parlay bets on NFL and college games. Gold is appealing the suspension, and reported on Sept. 23 that he has a hearing scheduled.
Why the Massachusetts probe matters
Massachusetts is not the first place to look into Gold’s case. Last month, the Arizona Department of Gaming opened its own gambling investigation, and Suzanne Trainor said on Friday that the Arizona investigation remains open and ongoing. The new Massachusetts review matters because it suggests the issue is no longer confined to one jurisdiction or one set of betting patterns.
Thomas Mills said the Massachusetts Gaming Commission’s interest would be “in response to reports of unusual betting in the Commonwealth, not necessarily one individual.” That distinction is important, because it leaves room for a wider inquiry while still sitting in the shadow of the Gold case.
What is Gold’s position now?
Gold’s legal and professional position remains serious. He has already been suspended by the NFL, he is appealing that punishment, and the league’s findings have placed his conduct under a harsh spotlight. Attorney Mike Caspino has said “the accusations against Gold are false,” which shows the dispute is set to continue.
There is still no final resolution, but the shape of the story has changed. What began as a league gambling matter now includes active scrutiny in Arizona and Massachusetts, and that makes the Cardinals Football angle much bigger than a single disciplinary case. The next key moment will be Gold’s hearing, but for now the broader question is whether the investigations uncover anything further before that process runs its course.
