Rangers have added Kosta Nedeljkovic on a season-long loan from Aston Villa, bringing in the 20-year-old right-back as the club continues to build out its squad at Ibrox.

The deal gives Rangers another option in the full-back areas, which have been a clear depth concern. Nedeljkovic arrives as the 11th summer arrival and does so with a conditional obligation to buy attached to the move, making this more than a short-term stopgap.

A full-back with England and Europe experience

Nedeljkovic moved to Aston Villa from Red Star Belgrade in summer 2024, then spent last season on loan at RB Leipzig. He made six appearances there and was limited by knee and back injuries. Before this Rangers move, he had also made 10 appearances for Aston Villa across all competitions.

For Rangers, the attraction is clear. Derek McInnes described Nedeljkovic as an athletic, energetic full-back who wants to get forward but also has a real desire to defend and compete, saying he will strengthen an important area of the team. That matters for a side that has been looking to tighten up its options in wide defensive roles.

What it means for Rangers

The signing also fits the wider shape of Rangers' summer. McInnes said the club still has work to do at the top end of the pitch, and made clear that the attack remains the next focus after the additions of Nedeljkovic and James Penrice. He said the club is reviewing different options and strikers, with the aim of landing the right one quickly.

Nedeljkovic, meanwhile, sounded eager to get started. He said Rangers is a big club and a big family, and called the move an easy decision after meeting with the coach. He described it as a big opportunity and a big responsibility, adding that he always tries to stay positive and work hard.

With Premier Sports Cup holders St Mirren due at Ibrox on Sunday in Rangers Vs St Mirren, the timing of the signing gives McInnes another option as the club prepares for a busy stretch. Rangers also have the wider challenge of responding after recent European frustration, including the buildup around Rangers Vs Jagiellonia Białystok and Rangers Vs Jagiellonia, where McInnes has already stressed the need for more risk and a stronger response at Ibrox.

For Rangers, the move adds a young defender with experience in England, Germany and international football, and it addresses a position that needed more cover. The next question is whether Nedeljkovic can quickly settle into the demands of the side and turn this loan into a longer-term solution.
