National Highways said drivers faced delays of up to 30 minutes, with congestion stretching two miles in both directions on the approach. For anyone heading through that stretch, the immediate issue was not just the closure itself but the length of the queues building behind it.

J56 and J57 stopped traffic

Officers halted eastbound and westbound traffic between J56 Ipswich and J57 Orwell Bridge while police were at the scene. Suffolk Police said only that police were there and traffic had been stopped, which left the cause of the incident outside the announcement.

That meant drivers using the route between Ipswich and the bridge had no through movement in either direction until the restriction was lifted. On a corridor that carries local and through traffic, that kind of stop creates immediate backup at both ends of the closure.

National Highways delays

National Highways put the delay at up to 30 minutes and said congestion reached two miles in both directions. Those figures matter to drivers deciding whether to wait, turn around, or reroute once they hit the queue.

When traffic resumes after a closure like this, the lane-by-lane impact does not disappear at the same moment the road reopens. Vehicles still have to clear the approach, so the first stretch after reopening can remain slow even after the main obstruction is gone.

The Orwell Bridge reopens

The road has since reopened, restoring movement across the A14 at the bridge. What caused the police-led incident that closed the Orwell Bridge remains the open question left by the announcement.
