For most of the night, Southampton’s first Championship win of the season looked like it might be built on patience rather than control. Instead, it was decided by a late burst that turned a tight contest into a 3-1 result and gave the Saints their first three points after a difficult opening run.

Stoke City, who had already shown they could stay in the game after Ethan Galbraith’s equaliser, were still level with Southampton deep into the second half. Then, with one minute plus stoppage time remaining, Divin Mubama found the breakthrough. Ryan Manning followed with a late penalty after Sam Edozie was fouled by Svante Ingelsson, and Southampton suddenly had a result that looked far more comfortable than the match had felt for long stretches.

A game decided in the final moments

The shape of the match mattered almost as much as the scoreline. Southampton started well enough, with Cyle Larin putting them ahead after eight minutes, but Stoke responded in the first half and settled the contest into a long, tense middle period. The second half remained balanced for much of its length, which made the late sequence decisive rather than merely dramatic.

That is why the final minutes told the story. Southampton did not need to dominate every phase to win; they needed to stay in the game long enough for the match to break in their favour. Mubama’s goal changed the emotional weight of the night, and Manning’s penalty sealed it.

For Tonda Eckert, the performance was still a work in progress. After the match, the Southampton head coach said there were things his team still need to improve on, but also stressed that every side at this stage of the season has to find ways to grind out games. That feels like a fair summary of this one. Southampton were not perfect, but they were stubborn enough to turn a draw into a much-needed victory.

The bigger significance is obvious. Southampton started the campaign on minus four points because of punishments linked to last season’s Spygate scandal, and this result moved them to minus one. More importantly, it ended their wait for a first league win and first league points of the season. Early in a Championship campaign, that kind of turnaround can matter as much psychologically as it does in the table.

Stoke, meanwhile, will be left thinking about how a competitive away display unraveled in the closing stages. They had stayed alive for so long that the late collapse will sting. Southampton needed the points more, and in the end they found them the hard way.
