Arthur Fils kept his comeback run going at the Cincinnati Open, beating the No 7 seed Flavio Cobolli 6-3, 6-4 on the rain-delayed semi-final day to reach his first Masters 1000 final.

The result matters for more than just one tournament. Fils is now set to rise to a career-high No 11, a strong step forward for a 22-year-old who has spent much of the past year working through injuries and interruptions.

A return built on adjustments

Fils' path to this point has not been straightforward. In spring last year, he suffered a stress fracture in his back and was sidelined for nine months. After returning to competition, he altered his forehand and serve technique, learned how to slide into his backhand on hard courts and dropped weight.

That work has helped him stay competitive despite limited preparation at times. He previously reached the Madrid Open semi-final, but only a week later he suffered a hip injury at the beginning of his opening-round match at the Italian Open and had to withdraw from Roland Garros again. He later lost in the second round at Wimbledon after minimal preparation.

Even with the setbacks, Fils has still shown enough quality to keep pushing forward. The Cincinnati win was his fourth in his last six matches and continued a run that has included two semi-finals and two other quarter-finals across his five completed Masters 1000 tournaments.

Why this final matters

For Fils, the bigger picture is as important as the single result. His first Masters 1000 final is a new benchmark, and the ranking jump to No 11 puts him in a stronger position in the ATP Finals race.

That backdrop makes the moment feel especially significant. Fils has repeatedly been forced to reset because of injuries, but he has continued to find a way back into major events and deeper tournament runs.

After the semi-final, Fils summed up that mindset simply: he said he was feeling great, but that some things happen for a purpose and that it was OK. He also made clear that staying positive is part of how he keeps going, noting that if he is sad or dwelling on setbacks, there is no way he can make it. If he stays positive, he gives himself a shot.

That approach has carried him through the summer in Cincinnati. Now, after the 6-3, 6-4 win over Cobolli, he gets a chance to play for his fourth title and his biggest title yet.
