Arkansas has settled its quarterback question for the 2026 season, with KJ Jackson named the starter after a lengthy battle with AJ Hill. First-year head coach Ryan Silverfield said the decision came down to the finer details of situational football, where Jackson had the slight edge.
The announcement on Sunday ends a competition that Silverfield described as true quarterback work from both players. It also gives the Razorbacks a clear QB1 heading into 2026, with the staff now able to move forward knowing who will lead the offense when the season begins.

Silverfield said the race was close for much of the process.
"There were some days it was back and forth and it was true quarterback competition," he said.
That is the key point in this decision. Both Jackson and Hill, Silverfield said, looked really good on base downs. The difference was how each handled the moments that matter most, when drives tighten up and a quarterback has to be efficient in specific situations.
"Ultimately what we decided was, they both looked really good on base downs... Ultimately, it came down to the actual situational football," Silverfield said.
He added that a quarterback must be efficient in those moments to succeed, and that Jackson had the slight edge in that area. In Silverfield's view, that gave Arkansas the best chance to have success moving forward.
A staff decision, then a clear message
Silverfield also explained that the final call was made carefully, after conversations with the offensive staff.
"Today when the decision was made, we made sure we were thorough with the fulm and the conversations. Ultimately, it's got to be my decision. But obviously, sitting down with our offensive coordinator, our quarterback coach, talking to offensive staff and getting a feel for what we think is best moving forward," he said.
That matters because it shows this was not a rushed move or a symbolic nod to one player over another. It was a considered choice, one designed to settle the position before the 2026 season starts.
Silverfield said he also understands the human side of the call.
"We've talked about when this decision was going to be made, you can't make everybody happy," he said.
For AJ Hill, the message was clear but respectful. Silverfield said the young quarterback has a bright future and must keep preparing as if he is still the starter.
"For a young man like AJ who has such a bright future... it's 'Hey, listen, this sucks. But you've worked so hard and you're a fantastic quarterback and a great young man and you're young, so be ready, prepared, continue to prepare like you're the starter,'" he said.
What comes next for Arkansas
The decision gives Arkansas clarity, and that is often the first step in building an offense with rhythm and purpose. Jackson now enters 2026 as the starter, while Hill remains part of the conversation if the situation changes.
Silverfield said it remains his job to keep following up and to continue those conversations. For Arkansas, though, the main uncertainty has now been answered. KJ Jackson is the starting quarterback, and the Razorbacks can move into the season with that hierarchy in place.
