Everything Sprouts, LLC pulled 5-ounce containers of alfalfa sprouts after federal health officials said 55 people in 15 states were sickened in an E. coli and salmonella outbreak tied to the North Star State company. At least 4 people were hospitalized, and Minnesota's Department of Health told consumers to check for Calco or Everything Sprouts sprouts, avoid eating them, and throw them away.

The outbreak includes 46 people with E. coli, 7 with salmonella, and 2 individuals who had both infections. Illnesses began between May 31 and Aug. 8, which places the recall inside an active outbreak window rather than after the fact.
The sprouts were distributed since May 27 under the Calco and Everything Sprouts brands to restaurants and grocery stores. For a product sold fresh and used quickly, that distribution window matters because a bag in a kitchen or cooler may still be there even after the recall notice.
FDA inspection on Aug. 19
On Aug. 19, the FDA began an inspection and sample collection at Everything Sprouts and recommended a recall. The company then issued a voluntary recall on Friday. The sequence shows regulators moved first, then the company matched that action with a market withdrawal.
The FDA had warned Everything Sprouts last year about serious violations after an inspection at its facility. Inspectors reported roof leaks, water dripping onto produce and clean employee smocks, and black organic matter on a hose in the overhead irrigation system. Those kinds of sanitation failures are not a side note in an outbreak like this; they are the kind of conditions that can allow contamination to move from equipment or water onto ready-to-eat produce.
Calco and Everything Sprouts
People checking their refrigerators or restaurant inventory should look for 5-ounce containers labeled Calco or Everything Sprouts and not eat them. Minnesota's Department of Health said to throw them away. The FDA and CDC are continuing to work with Everything Sprouts on the investigation and recall, while the state and federal notices leave one practical question in the foreground for shoppers and food service operators: whether the sprouts they bought since late May came from this same distribution.
