Walsall have signed full-back James Furlong on a one-year contract, continuing a busy summer recruitment drive that has now brought the club to 14 additions.
The 24-year-old arrives after a season that took him through several different stops. Furlong joined Brighton & Hove Albion's academy in 2019, moved to Hull City in September 2023 and later left Hull in February to sign a short-term deal with NK Maribor.
He then spent the 2024-25 season with AFC Wimbledon, where he played 30 games and helped the club win promotion via the League Two play-offs. That run of appearances gives Walsall a defender with recent experience in a promotion push, as well as a player who has already had to adapt to multiple environments in a short span.

For Walsall, the signing fits the pattern of a summer rebuild built around volume and competition for places. Bringing in a 24-year-old full-back on a one-year deal gives the club another option in a position that often demands balance, energy and reliability over the course of a long season.
The short length of the contract also keeps the move flexible for both sides. Walsall add depth and experience from a player who has already been around different levels and set-ups, while Furlong gets another chance to establish himself after a season that ended with promotion and a fresh opportunity in League Two.
With 14 signings already through the door, Walsall's summer work is clearly not slowing down. Furlong is another piece of that ongoing recruitment effort, and his recent playing time suggests he should be ready to compete for a role quickly.
