Geoff Smith says the MW4 beta dates have begun, and the first of two beta weekends for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is now live alongside Call of Duty: NEXT. Players are getting early hands-on access to the game’s maps and combat mechanics before the full schedule is laid out.
Geoff Smith on map design
The studio says each multiplayer map starts with a story, and Smith said, "We always try to come up with a story for each multiplayer map – why are teams there? That helps create this inciting incident and a bit of a MacGuffin. It gives us a sense of purpose."
That approach is meant to give the maps a reason to exist beyond a simple arena layout, while still leaving players with the kind of readability that competitive play demands.
Infinity Ward sightlines and movement
Smith also drew a hard line on layout choices, saying, "In the end, we have to have good clarity of sightlines for players, so it needs to be there, but it can’t impact gameplay negatively."
His rule for the multiplayer side is blunt: "Our studio runs off the mantra that gameplay is king."
For players in the beta, that means the visual detail is supposed to serve the route-finding, angles, and movement around each map instead of hiding them.
South Korea setting in Modern Warfare 4
Infinity Ward says Modern Warfare 4 is set in and around North and South Korea, with Silkworm described as a South Korean city-inspired map and Lotus built as a coastal, more rural map.
The studio also says Silkworm and Lotus helped inform the overall artistic design approach for Hajin for Warzone, while photogrammetry is used to capture photoreal environments as accurately as possible.
Sergio Gill said, "I would say a big emphasis on photorealism is a major pillar for the art team and visual style," and the studio says it still tests distinctive landmarks to make sure they do not hurt gameplay.
The first beta weekend gives players a first look at how that balance works in practice, but the source does not give the exact dates for either weekend, so anyone tracking MW4 beta dates still has only the two-weekend structure to work with.
