Apple has refreshed the Mac Mini with the M6 chip. The base model now starts at $899 with 16 GB of unified memory. The update lands after the small desktop had been hard to buy for most of this year.
That new entry price sits beside a bigger change under the hood. Apple says the M6 is built on a 2-nanometer process, and the chip adds Neural Accelerators for faster on-device AI performance.
Mac Mini and Mac Studio
Neither Mac changed on the outside. Apple kept the same desktop shells and focused the update on the silicon inside the Mac Mini and Mac Studio. For buyers, that means the choice is about performance tier rather than a new case or port layout.
The Mac Mini now comes in M6 and M5 Pro versions. The M5 Pro is the same chip currently found in the MacBook Pro. Apple says the M6 has a 12-core CPU split into two super cores, four performance cores, and six efficiency cores.
M6 and M5 Ultra
Apple says the M6 is 20 percent faster than the M5 in multithreaded performance and 40 percent faster than the M4. It also has 12 GPU cores after adding two more cores, plus a dual 16-core Neural Engine that doubles peak AI performance. The company says the Mac Mini can still be configured with up to 32 GB of unified memory and bandwidth up to 170 GB per second.
That performance story has a catch. Apple says the M6 Mac Mini is twice as fast as the M4 Mac Mini, yet the starting price is now $899. Buyers who were waiting for a cheaper entry point get more chip capability, but they also pay more to get it.
Mac Studio over Thunderbolt 5
The Mac Studio now comes in M5 Max and M5 Ultra versions. Apple says the M5 Ultra is its most powerful chip ever, and the company says it is the first chip to use a quad-die architecture. Apple also says the M5 Ultra has four more CPU cores for a total of 36 and still carries 80 GPU cores.
Apple also said four Mac Studios can be connected over Thunderbolt 5 to run frontier-level LLMs with over a trillion parameters locally. The practical question for buyers is narrower: whether the refreshed Mac Mini and Mac Studio stay in stock this time, and how quickly Apple turns this chip family into the next MacBook Pro update.
