Ashley Cole’s departure from the England Under-21 coaching set-up is not just a staff change. It closes a five-year spell in a role that helped sit at the heart of one of the most successful periods in recent England age-group football.
At 45, Cole leaves after being part of the coaching team that delivered successive European Under-21 titles, a run that underlined how much value he added beyond his playing legacy. That matters because Cole did not arrive in coaching as a name alone. He arrived with a clear path through the game, one that began after his retirement in 2019 and moved steadily through different levels of responsibility.
From player to coach
Cole retired from playing in 2019 after a career that brought him 107 England caps, three Premier League titles, seven FA Cups and one League Cup. He then completed his coaching badges at Derby County under Frank Lampard, before working in Chelsea's academy and later assisting managers at Everton, Birmingham City and England.
That journey helps explain why his England Under-21 role carried weight. By the time he was working with the age-group side, he had already seen the game from several angles: elite club football, development football and the demands of assistant work. The result was a profile that fit the modern coaching pathway, where tactical detail and player management matter as much as reputation.
Lee Carsley, who worked with Cole, said he had a positive, inspirational impact on his players and paid tribute to the role he played in England's two Euro wins as well as the current campaign. Carsley also pointed to Cole’s tactical and technical knowledge, which is the clearest sign that his influence went beyond simply being a famous former defender in the dugout.
A successful spell, but a natural turning point
Cole’s exit comes after a period in which England’s Under-21 side looked well served by continuity. Back-to-back European Under-21 titles are not easy to build or maintain, and being part of that setup gave Cole a direct hand in one of the more convincing success stories in England development football.
Even so, his departure does not feel abrupt in the wider context of his coaching career. In March, Cole took over as head coach of Serie B club Cesena, and in June he left the club after discussions about a change in strategy. Those moves suggest a coach still moving through different levels of the profession, still testing where his next major step should come from.
Carsley said he was certain Cole would go on to have more success in coaching, whatever the future holds. That may sound like routine praise, but it also reflects the reality of the job: a coach with Cole’s playing history, and a résumé that now includes academy work, assistant roles and international youth success, remains a significant figure even when the title on the door changes.
For England, the challenge is replacing not just experience but continuity. For Cole, the bigger story is that his coaching career is still in motion. Leaving the Under-21 role after five years ends one successful chapter, but it also leaves open the question of where a coach with his background goes next.
