Target withdrew the Kids' Glows Under Blacklight Circus Clown Halloween Costume after backlash on social media, ending sales of a children's item critics said resembled a racist caricature. The company apologized and said the costume was hurtful for its Black guests, team members and partners.
Target said, "As a company, we know we got this wrong, and we are deeply sorry." It also said, "The costume is offensive and should never have been part of our assortment."
Target's apology after backlash
The retailer said, "Removing the costume is an important first step, and the company is looking closely at how this happened and what needs to change to ensure this won't happen again." That leaves the practical issue in plain view: the product is gone, but the review of how it reached sale is still under way.
Customers and others on social media said the costume evoked blackface and minstrel shows. This is the part that sharpened the backlash, because the company did not just face complaints about a costume design; it faced claims that the design echoed a racist image.
Target and earlier criticism
The latest criticism lands after Target was criticized over its handling of products in its Pride Collection in 2023. The company has also recently faced supply shortages and backlash over its decision to end its diversity, equity and inclusion targets.
For shoppers, the immediate change is straightforward: the costume is no longer for sale. The larger question is whether Target's internal review changes how products are screened before they reach stores and online assortment, since the company has said only that it is looking closely at how this happened.
Similar backlash has forced other companies to pull products quickly, including a recent removal covered in a report on a golf advert pulled after criticism. Here, the consequence is narrower but sharper: Target has publicly reversed a sale and attached its apology to a specific product it says should never have been included in the first place.
